Dissociation and body-mind disconnection

When protection means moving away from yourself


Dissociation, meaning a temporary separation between bodily sensations, emotions, thoughts and memories, can be a protective response. When an experience is too intense or seems impossible to escape, the nervous system reduces contact with part of what is happening.

This may allow a person to keep functioning, endure the moment or preserve a relationship on which they depend. body-mind disconnection becomes a problem when it continues after the danger has ended. The mind may know that the present is safe while the body still reacts as if it must defend itself.


The Inner Animal: the nervous system searching for safety


In Bodymind Therapy, the Inner Animal is the automatic level of the nervous system that observes the environment and decides, before words, whether to approach, defend, flee or become immobile.

When it senses danger, the body may increase energy, tension and vigilance. When the situation appears inescapable, it may slow down, become numb or create a sense of unreality.

Research does not show one universal biological pattern of dissociation: some people are highly activated, others shut down, and others move between the two states [1, 2].


Energy regulation: not forced calm, but flexibility


Energy regulation means recognising and adjusting the body’s concrete level of activation. Energy is not used here in an esoteric sense; it describes feeling accelerated or slowed down, tense or relaxed, powerful or depleted.

Regulating the Inner Animal does not mean calming it at all times. It means being able to mobilise energy when necessary and return to recovery when danger has passed. Breathing, movement, contact with the floor, visual orientation, voice and relational distance can provide the body with present and verifiable information without forcing a person too quickly into internal sensations.


The Inner Child and learned laws


The Inner Child represents the emotional and relational rules learned while growing up. A child may learn that expressing a need leads to rejection, saying no destroys a relationship, or relaxing makes them vulnerable.

These experiences become inner laws: automatic predictions that continue to guide the body even when the adult mind thinks differently. The mind may say, “I can trust,” while the Inner Animal is already preparing to escape.


Memory reconsolidation: updating an old prediction


Memory reconsolidation, meaning the possible reopening and modification of an already formed memory, does not erase the past. It may update the prediction that the past continues to produce. For this to happen, the old expectation must be active and meet a different outcome.

This difference is called prediction error, meaning the gap between what is expected and what actually happens [3]. If a person expects that saying no will lead to abandonment and instead experiences their boundary being respected, the old law may begin to change.

In complete dissociation the difference may not be registered; under overwhelming activation it may not be connected to the present. Change therefore requires enough presence, not total relaxation.


Autonomic synchrony and co-regulation


In Bodymind Therapy, autonomic synchrony means a temporary coordination between the bodily states of therapist and client. It does not mean having the same heartbeat or the same emotion. Voice, pauses, posture, gaze, distance and the rhythm of interaction may nevertheless adjust to one another.

The closest scientific term is interpersonal physiological synchrony. Co-regulation occurs when the therapist comes close enough to the client’s state to understand it, while remaining stable enough to offer a different direction.

Research links some forms of synchrony mainly with the therapeutic alliance and emotion regulation, but it does not show that synchrony alone produces memory reconsolidation [4, 5].


A practical example


Elena knows rationally that she is allowed to say no, but when she tries during a session, her body begins to feel distant, her gaze becomes fixed and the words disappear. The therapist does not push. They slow their voice, remind Elena that she may stop the exercise, and invite her to look around the room and feel her feet on the floor.

When Elena is sufficiently present again, she tries to say no once more. The therapist respects the boundary and remains in relationship.

The old law “If I say no, I will be abandoned” now meets a different experience that can also be registered in the body. This is a fictional composite example created only to explain the process.


The SS Dissociation protocol


An essential part of Bodymind Therapy is learning the SS Dissociation protocol, a clinical teaching method designed to recognise early signs of body-mind disconnection, limit their escalation and gradually restore contact with the present, the body and the ability to choose.

The protocol does not force a person to feel everything. It teaches how much contact can be maintained without becoming overwhelmed and which Inner Child law is being activated. It is used in therapy and is also taught in a dedicated course for practitioners, bodyworkers and clients.

The SS Dissociation protocol is a specific formulation of Bodymind Therapy and has not been scientifically validated as a stand-alone method. Individual principles on which it draws, such as orientation, gradual regulation, choice and co-regulation, are connected to clinical research [6].


From survival to choice


Dissociation may have protected a person when feeling was too dangerous. Growth begins when the only options are no longer feeling everything or avoiding everything.

The Inner Animal can learn to regulate energy more flexibly, the Inner Child can test whether the old laws are still valid, and the adult part can remain present long enough to choose a new response.

Note 1. The autonomic nervous system and dissociation. The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion and sweating. The sympathetic branch mobilises resources for action, while the parasympathetic branch contributes to slowing and recovery; both can also be active at the same time. A systematic review of 28 studies involving approximately 1,300 participants found no single autonomic profile of trauma-related dissociation. Beutler S et al. Note 2. Defence networks and overmodulation. Defensive responses involve, among other structures, the amygdala, hypothalamus, brainstem and prefrontal regions. In some groups with trauma-related dissociation, researchers have described overmodulation, meaning strong cortical control of emotional responses. This is a group-level model, not an individual diagnostic test. Lanius RA et al. Note 3. Bodily signals and interoception. Interoception is the process through which the brain detects and interprets internal signals such as heartbeat, breathing, tension, hunger or nausea. Note 4. Memory reconsolidation. Reconsolidation is well documented in basic research, but its clinical application has conditions and limits. Note 5. Synchrony between therapist and client. A meta-analysis of 23 publications from 13 studies found different results according to the type of synchrony measured; it did not reveal one simple general effect on alliance and treatment outcome. Note 6. Scientific status of the protocol. The SS Dissociation protocol is a specific formulation of Bodymind Therapy. No published clinical studies were identified that separately evaluated its effectiveness, safety or mechanism under this name. It should therefore be presented as an internal protocol inspired by studied clinical principles, not as a scientifically validated stand-alone treatment.
